Nigerians seeking visas to travel to the United Kingdom will face stringest visa procedures if proposed plans are implemented.
The British authorities, according to a BBC report, say about three thousand Nigerians who came into the country on study and work visa filed for asylum after overstaying their visa, an action it says runs contrary to its immigration policy.
An unnamed Home Office spokesperson, according to the Times of London said: “Our upcoming Immigration WhitePaper will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system. We are building intelligence on the profile of these individuals to identify them earlier and faster”.
Nigerians are the third largest nationals who filed for asylum following visa overstay in latest data from the Home Office.
Pakistan has 10,542 nationals in this category, while 2,862 Sri Lankan nationals are involved.
The UK government is set to publish an immigration white paper later this month amid hopes to tackle abuse by foreign nationals who arrive on work and study visas and go on to claim asylum by building profiles of such individuals to identify them faster.
