About 25 million people including over 400,000 internally displaced persons in Nigeria, are presently in acute food and nutrition insecurity crisis, while over 33 million people are expected to be in worst situation between June and August 2025.
This was made known by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at the Cadre Harmonise report presentation analysis workshop in Abuja.
The Cadre Harmonise programme is a unifying tool that provides relevant and transparent analyses of current and projected food and nutrition situations in Nigeria, especially as the country faces significant food security challenges exacerbated by escalating conflicts, economic instability, and a typical staple food prices.
Based on the aforementioned, stakeholders in the Agriculture sector, gathered in the auditorium to share information on the food insecurity situation in 26 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) and make recommendations on the best way to address the situation.
According to the report, Zamfara, Yobe, Niger, and Sokoto states are in acute situation presently; however the situation is expected to be worse in the coming year with Borno, Kaduna, Gombe, Benue, Adamawa, Taraba, Kebi, Kogi states and the federal capital territory (FCT) joining the list.
With the results from the Cadre Harmonise report presented, it is expected that government at all levels will set up efforts in order to ensure that food is not only available but accessible and affordable to everyone especially the vulnerable population in Nigeria.
