Gov Godwin Obaseki
A Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has granted an Order Restraining the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki and the Edo State Government from enforcing the order of the governor, mandating all the residents of Edo State to compulsorily get Covid-19 jab or risk denial of access to public places and large gatherings.
Governor Obaseki had during the flag-off of the second phase of Covid-19 vaccination in Benin City recently said that residents without proof of COVID-19 vaccination would be barred from public facilities and large gatherings, including worship centres, banks and other public services in the State.
In a Suit No. FHC/PH/FHR/266/2021 filed by Mr Charles Osaretin against the Governor of Edo State and 5 others and dated August 30, 2021, Mr Echezona Etiaba, SAN urged the court to order parties to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for the enforcement of the applicant’s fundamental rights and for the leave of court to serve the respondents by publishing the court processes in a national daily circulating in Nigeria.
The orders were granted as prayed and the court adjourned till September 10 for hearing of the substantive motion.
