The Deputy Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon. Dare Kadiri, has been impeached.

Hon. Kadiri was impeached on Thursday during the plenary of the Assembly.

However, some members of the Assembly faulted the impeachment, saying that due process was not followed.

Great Achiever Magazine reports that 20 members of the Assembly had earlier signed a notice of impeachment against Hon Kadiri.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, at the plenary on Tuesday constituted a 5-member Adhoc committee to investigate allegation of gross misconduct levelled against Hon Kadiri, and directed the committee to submit its report within 72 hours.

The Adhoc committee submitted its report on Thursday, and recommended the impeachment of Hon. Kadiri, having found him guilty of gross misconduct.

But contrary to the rule of the House which makes it mandatory for the report of the committee to be debated by members, a lawmaker, who preferred annonimity told Great Achiever Magazine that the Speaker did not allow the report to be debated, even when some members signified their intentions to talk.

The lawmaker further said that, the Speaker only informed the House that the report of the committee had been adopted without reading out the names of members who adopted the report.

He also contended that the rule about impeachment of Deputy Speaker is that individual member shall vote either for or against the impeachment, and not through voice vote which the Speaker adopted in the case of Hon. Kadiri.

The impeachment of Hon. Kadiri came on the heels of his arrest and detention last Friday by the police on the allegation that he led suspected hoodlums to invade the residence of the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, at Oru-Ijebu, an allegation which he denied.

Meanwhile, Hon. Dare Kadiri has reacted to his impeachment, saying that the development, to say the least, was grossly unconstitutional and illegal.

He said: “I have initiated consultation with my lawyers to fashion out the best possible way to address this infraction. I urge my teeming supporters, constituents and members of my political party in Ijebu North II State Constituency to remain calm as the issues that threw up this unwarranted action are sorted.

“In whatever capacity I find myself now or in the future, I remain committed to the ideals of a functional legislature, tenets of democracy and good governance”.
