The Nigerian government has admitted that most youths are unemployable, despite certain levels of education acquired.
This was revealed by, Blessing Ehi-Ugwu, the National Coordinator of the newly inaugurated innovative and effectiveness in acquisition of skills, IDEAS project of the federal government, at a meeting with world Bank officials at an implementation workshop for the innovation grant facility.
For the world bank Education Specialist, Mistura Rufai, the need to empower Nigerian youths with digital innovation skills has become imminent, that is why ten million dollars is being committed in the first phase.
In the last count, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, youths unemployment rate in Nigeria was 8.6% in the third quarter of 2023, which increased from 7.2% in the second quarter of 2023.
According to the NBS, the general unemployment rate in Nigeria was 4.2% in the second quarter of 2023 and the rate of unemployment among persons with post-secondary education was 8% in the second quarter of 2023, while the employment-to-population ratio was 77.1% in the second quarter of 2023.
