Food stampede: Falana demands compensation for bereaved families

Femi Falana

Rights activist and lawyer, Femi Falana has blamed the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) for the death of 67 Nigerians in the recent unfortunate stampede incidents in Ibadan, Oyo State; Maitama, Abuja and Okija in Anambra State.

Falana, who stated this at the Akeredolu Leadership Series held in honour of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu in Akure, said government must pay compensation to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the incidents.

It is exactly one year since the demise of Governor Akeredolu who died after a long battle with Prostate Cancer. Guests from all walks of life converged at the Dome in Akure to celebrate and honour him at a leadership lecture series.

Falana, who was guest speaker, used the occasion to charge the country’s security agencies to be more active in protecting lives and property across board which was what the late Akeredolu stood for.

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, while speaking on his former boss, described him as a courageous leader who spoke truth to power and fought for the advancement of democracy and the Rule of Law in the country.

Various speakers at the gathering said security of life and property should be the primary concern and responsibility of government.
